The increase in population and the resulting excessive demand for fossil fuels have created severe environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions and widespread pollution. Identifying the main problems arising from the production and consumption of fossil fuels provides the opportunity to search for renewable, sustainable and economical alternative fuels to alleviate the current problem. With the advancement of modern technologies, the use of biofuels has expanded due to their high potential for production from biomass. In particular, the production of biodiesel from microalgae, as a way to obtain clean and renewable energy, can play an important role in this field. The production of biodiesel from microalgae as a new method has challenges ahead, and issues such as high production costs, reduced productivity rates and potential environmental impacts in this field must be considered. On the other hand, there are strong prospects for this approach, because this type of biofuel is very efficient and environmentally friendly. Hence, this article addresses the main aspects related to the production of biodiesel from microalgae and discusses the challenges associated with each stage of biodiesel production from microalgae.
