Energy is one of the most important inputs in agricultural production, and the continuation of the growing trend of energy imbalance in the country's key carriers will have economic and social effects and consequences in the agricultural sector. By examining the energy consumption of the agricultural sector, this study seeks to identify the political, economic, social, technical, environmental and legal challenges of the energy imbalance in the agricultural sector in order to provide solutions to help eliminate the energy imbalance in agricultural activities. The results show that the trend of consumption of various energy carriers in the agricultural sector during the country's economic development programs shows that the average final energy consumption of the agricultural sector has increased from 30.5 million barrels of crude oil equivalent in 1989 to 64.2 million barrels of crude oil equivalent at the end of the sixth plan (1999). However, the average share of final consumption in the country's average total final consumption has decreased from 8.3 percent to 4.8 percent. The agricultural sector's energy consumption in 1401 was 81 million barrels of crude oil equivalent, and its share of total final energy consumption was 5.4%. Optimal management of resources and consumption, along with investment in clean and renewable energy infrastructure and modernization of agricultural machinery, are among the solutions to overcome this problem. Also, the energy imbalance in Iran is not only a technical or economic issue, but is primarily a management problem that requires reforms in the country's energy governance.
