Investigation of Thermal Performance of Unglazed Transpired-Plate Solar Collectors in Perpendiclar Wind

Renewable energies have received substantial attention due to exceeding rate of energy demand and diminishing rate of energy resources. In this direction solar energy as the future supplier of part of the world’s energy demand is at the frontier. Using unglazed transpired-plate solar collectors (UTCs) to provide heat for crop drying and ventilation air heating of large spaces such as factories and industrial companies is now promising due to their high efficiency and low cost. In this research the thermal efficiency of such collectors, which are mounted open to the atmosphere and are subjected to wind and solar radiation is investigated. Wind is assumed to blow perpendicular to the perforated absorber plate while the heated air is sucked from the back through the perforations. Different perforation geometries for a number of plate’s material are considered while the wind speed and suction rate is changing. Effective parameters are determined and the effect of each parameter on the thermal performance of the collector is investigated. Heat transfer from the back side of the plate is considered as well. Results show that the overall thermal behaviors of these collectors, in the perpendicular flow, are almost similar to those for parallel flow although some deviations are observed.
