Annual energy management in microgrids can significantly reduce the dependence of these networks on the main power grid. This optimization approach allows for better use of locally generated or stored surplus energy to meet energy needs in other time periods. This paper investigates an innovative multi-objective approach for annual energy management in smart microgrids. The microgrid under study is an electricity network consisting of small residential houses with random consumption patterns in different seasons and days of the year. Probabilistic modeling of wind turbines and photovoltaic panels is also included in this analysis. A sodium-sulfur-based electrical storage system is also used for energy management. Energy management is investigated in two scenarios including daily management during a year and annual management. Economic and environmental indicators are considered as objective functions of the microgrid energy management problem, which are optimized using a combination of multi-objective intelligent algorithm and fuzzy decision-making method. Numerical results from implementing this method in a sample microgrid show that its performance is adequate and has significantly improved the economic and environmental metrics of the grid. Overall, this approach has led to increased efficiency of the smart microgrid.
